The decompression feature won't work. Adjust the valves and all will be well. To everyone, Thanks for all the suggestions so far.
I talked to a Dealer and shared the problem, and he said that starting with a new solenoid would be a less expensive place to start. We put that on and it turns a little bit farther than before, but would not complete one revolution. I also pulled the spark plug out and it turns over freely.
I talked with another Dealer and he mentioned that John Deere might be doing a recall for these 19 hp Briggs engines because of the Automatic Decompression Valve. I am charging the battery not to make sure that it has a good charge on it. I would welcome any thoughts that you may have up to this point. I am not aware of any recall on those engines. If it was in my shop I would adjust the valves.
Most times that takes care of starting if the battery and starter are good. Best look at a manual before you start, the procedure is more involved than most. I have seen some cams go flat, though.
Most times it was on engines that never had the oil changed. First thing with tapping on the starter is you will break the magnets! Had the same problem last year and just go chance the solenoid.Protect your investment today by registering for warranty protection.
