In this Quick Start guide, we walk through the process of setting up an Unreal Engine Project to work with a professional video card from Blackmagic Design. At the end of this guide:. For a working example that shows many of the elements described below put into practice, see the Virtual Studio showcase, available on the Learn tab of the Epic Games Launcher.
Make sure that you have a supported card from Blackmagic Design, and that you've installed the necessary drivers and software.
For details, see the Blackmagic Media Reference page. Make sure that your card is working correctly, and that you have some video input feeding in to at least one of the card's SDI ports. Open an Unreal Engine Project that you want to integrate with your video feeds. This page shows the steps in the Third Person Blueprint template, but the same steps will work equally well in any Project. The Blackmagic Design components used in this guide are built on top of the Media Frameworkand we'll use Blueprints to script the video capturing process at runtime.
Some prior knowledge of these topics is recommended but not required. Before you can get video input from your Blackmagic card into your Unreal Engine Level, and send output from the Unreal Engine through one of your Blackmagic card's SDI ports, you'll need to do some basic setup to enable the Blackmagic Media Player Plugin in your Project.
If you started your Unreal Engine Project from one of the Templates in the Film, Television, and Live Events category, the necessary plugins may already be enabled for you. If not, follow the instructions below to enable them. Check its Enabled checkbox. Check its Enabled checkbox, if it's not already checked.
Your Project is now ready to accept video from the Blackmagic card, and to send rendered output to the card. In the next sections, we'll hook it up and start playing video in and out. In this process, we'll make video input from the Blackmagic card visible in the current Level in the Unreal Editor.
This process uses a Media Bundle: a kind of Asset that packages together several different types of Assets involved in the Media Framework, and that offers you control over some advanced features like lens deformation, chroma-keying, color correction, and more. In your Content Browserexpand the Sources panel 1. Right-click, and choose New Folder from the context menu 2. Rename your new folder Blackmagic. Your new Asset's name is automatically selected in the Content Browser, so you can give it a descriptive name: Type a new name, like BlackmagicMediaBundleand press Enter.
We'll take a look at these Assets later. Double-click your new Media Bundle to edit its properties. The Media Bundle is capable of playing video from any kind of media source the Engine supports, so you'll need to tell it that you want to get the video from your Blackmagic card.
Once you've identified the type of Media Source you want the Media Bundle to handle, you can then set up any configuration properties offered by that type of source. The most important thing to set here for the Blackmagic Media Source is the Configuration setting, to make sure that the bundle is set up to capture video from the right device and input port, using the same resolution and frame rate as the actual video feed.
Click the arrow to open the settings submenu, select the options that match your setup, then click Apply in the submenu. The options you see may vary depending on the devices you have installed. For details on all of the properties you can set for a Blackmagic Media Source, see the Blackmagic Media Reference page. If you want to apply any compensation to the incoming video to account for lens distortion, you can set up the physical properties of the lens in the Lens Parameters section.
These Lens Parameters just set up the physical properties of the lens.DeckLink capture and playback cards are used every day on Hollywood feature films, episodic television programs, music videos, commercials and more!

I'm trying to do some virtual production and mixed reality stuff in Unreal using live cameras and I'm having a LOT of problems with capture cards Any help would be appreciated.
I'm trying to bring in xp60 Even with their own capture software I either get no video or video with dropouts horizontal black bars Magewell Capture Pro 4 input PCI card -- When I open up the media object in unreal I see 2 tracks and over formats, but nothing seems to have any video. Card works fine outside unreal. Logitec c webcam -- only one that works, but I need a 60hz camera and this is 30 only. Has anyone had any luck with any of these cards and GoPro cameras?
Are the Aja cards any better? Honestly I'm getting to the hair-tearing point with this. I have an Elgato CamLink 4k coming tomorrow. Any ideas on how to get the Magewell or Avermedia cards I have to work with unreal? Tags: None. Comment Post Cancel. None of the cameras I'm using have any DRM, and I've been able to capture video using the app supplied by each manufacturer. So the video is there and getting in to the computer, I just can't get to it in Unreal for some reason.
I tested the Avermedia LGX2, failed to open in unreal. Elgato Camlink 4k opens ok and seems to work Why am I having so much trouble getting cards to work with unreal? All these work with most other capture cards. Any updates on this? No luck with Decklink Quad original model working so far. Any update? Sorry I missed this.
Blackmagic DeckLink Mini Monitor 4K and Video I/O
The unreal plugin for it currently has some bugs with more than one 4k stream it should do 2 but they are looking at that problem. The problem here is simply drivers.
It appears that anything that shows up on your PC as a webcam ie: in the "camera" app should work with Unreal. If you have an AJA or Blackmagic card, check the compatibility list for the plugin on the unreal marketplace. If your card is not listed it might still work but probably not. One other trick which is ugly, if there is an OBS plugin for your card I think OBS can make it's output appear like a webcam which Unreal should be able to see. I haven't been able to find anything else as cheap as the Elgato Camlink 4k.
I think that any USB capture device that says it lets you use your DSLR with "video conference" applications or "as a webcam" will probably work. Big thanks for your help.More results. What is the reason? Can I fix this myself in the source code of the plugin? Did you solve this? That is outstanding. Thanks for sharing. Good to know it can be done, but wondering if this is something you would ever sell on the marketplace? Great demo.
